Dresses, sundresses and skirts tailored along the oblique fall especially beautifully, flow perfectly along the body, gently emphasize the curves of the female figure.

The world-wide popularization of cuts for oblique, not individual parts, but entire products belongs to the well-known fashion designer of the beginning of the 20th century Madeleine Vione. It was the radical approach to changing the cut that brought her world fame.

Cut along the oblique Madeleine Vionne

A slanting cut loves light, softly draped fabrics. It can be thin satin or crepe silk, chiffon, muslin, thin cotton cambric, viscose and even dress coat. Thanks to the oblique cut, the fabric acquires additional plasticity, which is completely absent when cutting the product along the share. At the same time, the material becomes more pliable, easily stretches, providing a soft fit.

The oblique cut has its own characteristics, it requires confident experience, more time for sewing and fitting the model to the figure. For acquaintance and acquiring the skill of working with an oblique cut, select thin cotton; a product cut from it can also serve as a model.

What kind of fabric is cotton: properties, care, sewing recommendations

If in the selected pattern the share does not go along the oblique, and you want to sew the dress or skirt exactly along the oblique, its direction can be easily changed without any tricks and difficulties.

Step 1

Lay out the shelf pattern on a flat surface.

Step 2

Fold the shelf part in such a way that a perpendicular is formed in relation to the line of the middle of the front, which coincides with the shared one.

Step 3

Fold the pattern again flat and draw a line along the resulting bend. This will be the new direction of the equity line - along the oblique.

Step 4

Do the same for the backrest part.

What is a shared thread and how to determine it

Advice:

✂ For convenience, re-mirror the details of the shelf and backrest in a mirror image.

✂ Cut parts in one layer on a large surface.

✂ Cut out parts with large allowances for seams - 1.5−2 cm.

✂ Often chop parts together and only then wipe them.

How to avoid shifting when knitting silk parts

✂ The consumption of fabric when cutting along an oblique is much greater than when cutting along a shared one. Therefore, be sure to make a preliminary layout of the pattern to determine the required amount of fabric.
