Want to find out how the classes at Burda Academy go, and how one of the most popular workshops on working with thin fabrics works? Details are in our report.

On July 27, Saturday, at the Burda Academy in Moscow, a regular workshop on working with thin fabrics was held. According to the Academy, this is one of the most popular MKs from the entire program. No wonder: things from thin, flowing, translucent materials turn out to be very beautiful, and in the work these fabrics are moody. At the same time, they are often also not cheap - for example, one does not want to spoil, for example, chic silk worth 2-3 thousand rubles per meter. How to be Study! I attended this lesson and will tell you how the lesson is organized and what you can learn about it.

I admit: before this master class from the experience with thin fabrics, I only had to sew curtains from very thin cotton batiste. But cotton, albeit translucent, is not a capricious chiffon and does not try to leak silk from under the fingers. In addition, curtains, as a rule, have neither tucks, nor a neck that needs to be processed. In a word, I went to MK with some excitement: will I succeed? As it turned out, doubts were in vain. The master class is conceived and organized in such a way that it will be useful and understandable even to a beginner who has never sewed from thin fabrics. But if you already have experience in such work, in this lesson you will probably learn something that you did not know. Plus - you can discuss everything with fellow needlewomen and a teacher, try to work with different materials, tools and machines ... But in order.

What to sew for the summer from silk: 18 patterns of varying complexity

Theory

"Basically, we will sew, not write," - beginning the lesson, warns the Academy professor Alevtina Zolotova. And this is true: more than half of the 3-hour master class is devoted to practice. But to write down some points will also be useful, especially from the first, theoretical part of the lesson. Alevtina Zolotova, specialty - an engineer-technologist of garments, plus a master with great experience. She seems to have answers to any sewing questions!

“I myself developed a master class, because I really love these materials,” the teacher says. On the large table, behind which all the listeners are located, there are many rags of fabrics - smooth silk, chiffon, thin cambric ... Plus - scissors and other necessary tools. If you don’t have the right material or equipment, don’t worry: both fabrics for practice, and tools, and, of course, the equipment for this MK is provided by the Academy.

Like the sewing project, the lesson begins with a discussion of patterns that are sewn from thin fabrics, and the selection of materials. Then - a rather detailed discussion about decoding. For delicate fabrics, especially natural silk, this is one of the most important issues that require attention. Can silk be washed? If so, how to do it? Why can a print “slip” from raw fabric and how to avoid this? Why, after wetting the silk, you can not put off the ironing? I didn’t know much of what was voiced and I didn’t read about it anywhere, although before the master class I looked at recommendations for working with thin fabrics.

The capriciousness of these fabrics is also that you need to work with them, carefully selecting tools and additional materials. For example, unsuitable scissors can ruin the fabric when cutting, especially sharp and high-quality ones are needed. Not only special pins and needles for the sewing machine are needed, but also thin hand needles for basting - suitable, for example, beaded with a sharp end.Threads, adhesive materials, marking accessories - all this when working with thin fabrics is better to choose specifically to avoid unpleasant surprises and disappointments. It is not surprising that many face problems when they try to learn how to sew from thin fabrics on their own! I really liked the fact that all the materials and tools - right there, in stock, you can consider them, many - try it. Another useful point - we record not only the types and qualities of the necessary tools and materials, but also the names of recommended brands and even stores where you can buy all this.

Separately, we discussed with the teacher the selection of patterns, the manufacture of a layout (which is highly recommended when working with thin fabrics), the subtleties of the layout of the details of the pattern on the fabric, and, of course, the cutting.

Practice

“The topic of thin fabrics is hot, slippery, and niche,” the teacher notes before starting the practical part of the lesson. “The same seam, the same processing on different such materials will behave and look different. To learn how to work with them "We need experience. And experience - in the number of approaches. We discussed the theory, then there will be practice, and at home you can try the same techniques on different fabrics, different models."

After hearing the teacher’s explanation and seeing the same thing in practice, we cut samples, learn to make a French seam, tuck, double bodice, process the neck with a slanting trim, process the bottom, iron. Different tasks of the practical part of the MK can be trained to perform on different tissues - good, in the class they are in stock. You can also sit down at different cars - for example, if you are not very confident in your abilities, choose a machine with speed control to scribble more slowly. Of course, the big plus of the full-time master class is that at any time you can not only ask the teacher a question, but also ask for help if something is not clear or does not work out.

The result of the practical part is a few samples with seams, methods of processing, and details that listeners can take with them. The result of the entire lesson is a significantly increased self-confidence, a bunch of new knowledge, including subtleties and life hacks, and a desire to try them out.
